South African Braai

I lived in SA Joburg for 17 years and ate many a lekker boerewors. And steak, and lamb, and all sorts of wild game - pretty much anything that could be tossed over an open flame.

Some of my favorite childhood memories involve going to a farm and spending the day preparing the wood fire in the braaivleis pit, standing over the burning meat, flames and smoke, and gorging on pounds of wonderful, succulent sausages, steaks and chops.
I remember seeing braaimeat braais created out of old wheel rims, with bed springs used for the grill. Old, rusted 30 litre drums were popular, as were concrete blocks.
